In the 13th Century, Dhemaji was ruled by the Ahom king Chow Chukapha. However, from 1223 to 1523, the kingdom was under the rule of the Chutias and then later again it was overtaken by the Ahoms. Since those times, Dhemaji has been inhabited by indigenous tribes such as Mishing, Ahom, Rabha, Tai - Khamti, Konch, Keot, etc. who had all migrated to this part of time.

The origin of the word ‘Dhemaji’ is considered to erupt from ‘dhal’ meaning flood and ‘dhemali’ meaning play. The word ‘dhal’ got omitted and dhemali turned into ‘Dhemaji’. Flood was and still is a frequent disaster in the entire district of Dhemaji and hence the name originated.
